Ants and Birds on Reddit

The birding community is as vibrant on Reddit as anywhere, and we love to see it.
We recently came across a post on Reddit from about a year ago that posted the following photos:

within 24 hours a bird tray feeder is infested with ants.

It’s a little hard to tell, but because the mesh tray with mealworms was not protected lower down on the pole, according to this user, within 24 hours, the tray was completely overrun with ants (see below). We think it’s critical to address the question this user posted to the forum.

The question was whether or not they should “put ant killer at the base?”
The answer: Absolutely NOT

a mealworm buffet completely covered in ants. Ants can be avoided without chemicals by using The Ant-Mote™

Use The Ant-Mote™ for a chemical-free way to protect your seed feeder, mealworms and all, from crawling insects.

The community agreed that no poison should ever be used near bird feeders.

So, when considering how to deploy your feeders and The Ant-Mote™, you have a choice. Some birds love to eat ants, some do not (hummingbirds definitely do not like eating ants). For the situation shown above, we suggest either using The Ant-Mote™ below your tray feeder to protect the food you’ve put out for the birds, or, if you want the ants to find the food and then be an extra treat for your birds, use The Ant-Mote™ above your tray feeder and turn your 1” pole into a one-stop backyard birding oasis.
